Greetings Parents:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, your child will receive virtual instruction in English 9 and English 12 via the Alabama State Department of Education’s ACCESS Virtual Learning Classroom.  Students will NOT be completing their work via SCHOOLOGY.

ACCESS Virtual Learning (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide) is an education initiative of the Alabama Department of Education. It provides opportunities and options for Alabama public high school students to engage in Advanced Placement (AP), elective, and other courses to which they may not otherwise have access or be able to schedule. Additional information may be found at http://accessdl.state.al.us.

All ACCESS Virtual Learning courses are taught by experienced teachers who

• Hold Alabama certification in their content areas

• Are highly qualified in the content areas they teach

• Meet background check requirements (including fingerprinting)

• Complete ongoing professional development provided by ACCESS Virtual Learning

Students will have an onsite classroom facilitator who is (1) an adult supervisor and (2) has professional training in online methodology and technical aspects of Web-based instruction, including safety and lab procedures if applicable.

Students will be required to complete the ACCESS student orientation and pass a quiz with 90% mastery in order to be enrolled in their English Class.  Students may begin practicing the orientation module using the following link:

Click on Home and Login into Student Orientation.  Students should log in daily during their English Class and work on the modules.

When student logins are generated by the school (within the first week), they will then have the opportunity to either review the material or complete the quiz.  Upon successful completion of the quiz (90%), students will be able to access their English coursework.

Students are expected to participate in daily learning activities such as discussions, projects, labs, group work, writing workshops, and assessments during their schedule English Class Time.

Students are expected to complete the Orientation Module and Quiz by August 21, 2020.

Students enrolled Advanced Placement Courses will be required to complete a pre-reading activity.

All ACCESS Virtual Learning core courses meet Alabama Course of Study standards. The State Department of Education has received approval from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for 52 ACCESS core courses.

Interactive videoconferencing courses use the textbook designated by the sending/delivery teacher. Most online courses that require a textbook utilize a Web-based or CD version.

All grades assigned by ACCESS Virtual Learning teachers are official. Participating schools will accept the numerical grades assigned by ACCESS teachers for inclusion on students’ transcripts and will ensure that the assigned grades are recorded by the facilitators or counselors in accordance with local policy. Honor points, weighting, and other special considerations will be made in accordance with established LEA policy. NOTE:  There is currently no alternative to English 9 or English 12 for Brewbaker Technology Magnet School. Students must enroll and complete this course for credit.
